Mick Schoon was born in Northwest Indiana in 1986. He grew up in a bucolic town where he spent most of his time catching wild amphibians. He received his Bachelor in Fine Arts from Indiana University in 2014. He was the recipient of the Merit Award for Fine Arts upon graduation. During his undergraduate career, he spent seven months in northern Canada teaching ceramics at an international camp. During this time, he gained inspiration from nature and his surroundings, as reflected in the choice of glazes and shapes used in his earlier work.
In 2013, due to an injury to his left hand, he tore the ulnar collateral and radial collateral ligaments that limited his ability to work with clay. During this time, Mick pursued his interest in graphic design and worked on illustrating a children's book called 'No Turn on Red'. After full recovery, Mick returned to ceramics with a heightened interest in amalgamating digital media and sculptural art. His current work is dedicated to creating illustrations using Adobe Illustrator and transferring them onto his ceramic pieces. Initially, he used the 'image transfer on clay' technique to reflect inwards and illustrate images that portrayed his struggles living with Type 1 Diabetes. He currently takes inspiration from his Dutch roots by creating nuanced delftware pieces that reflect upon contemporary political and social issues.
Mick holds a Master in Education (Visual Arts) from DePaul University. Mick is an avid traveler who seeks inspiration from immersing himself in new cultures. He currently resides in Salt Lake City, Utah with his wife, Ambreen and his cat, Waffles.
